Steven Brockshus, a sophomore in agricultural education and president of the Iowa FFA Association, and Josh Earll, incoming freshmen in agricultural education and FFA northwest district vice president, share a new experience with the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.

The 2012 Iowa FFA Career Development Event of Agricultural Mechanics competition was hosted at the Ag 450 Farm for the first time. In the past it had been held in Davidson Hall, limiting the number of tasks and participants.

Tasks ranged from written tests to wiring a small electric motor to tractor diagnostics as well as constructing a hitch pin from blueprints. There was one team task, four individual challenges and two tests.

The agricultural education and studies and agricultural and biosystems engineering departments hosted the event. There were about 120 participants from 27 high schools.

The event was sponsored by Lincoln Electric, which provided some teaching materials. Students used small gas engines, small electric motors, welding machinery and laptops during the competition.

Laura Underwood, student intern for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Communications Service, produced this video.
