I spent my summer interning at Prairie Meadows Race Track and Casino in Altoona, Iowa. As a communications specialist my daily duties included a variety of jobs from working with reporters from television stations, newspapers and horse racing magazines. I was given a lot of opportunities to do different forms of communications. I was fortunate enough to have an article published in the Altoona Herald and about racing websites. I also was able to network with people in the television industry and gained experience interviewing the winners of the races every Saturday.
I learned about Prairie Meadows and the racing industry when I was in high school at "Youth Days...Racing for the Future" a program about careers in the horse racing industry. During my internship I was able to give tours to other students who were participating in the same type of program and I assisted with the program's promotion.
I have been offered other internships around the country because of this internship. I would like to pursue other internships with more promotional speaking in the future. I have been offered an internship in Texas working for the American Quarter Horse Association, but haven't decided yet because I am also running for a National FFA Office.
