Robert Horton developed the heat pulse probe, which measures variations in soil temperature by depth and time. Horton, a Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in agronomy, said scientists need a better understanding about the top six inches of soil that is the base of a food chain that supports over 6 billion people.
