Jerry DeWitt presented ten tips at the CALS workshop, "The USDA Specialty Crop Research Initiative (SCRI): Preparing A Successful Grant Application," on October 6, 2009. Dr. DeWitt served as review panel manager for the SCRI program for two years.
1. Build and document the case for why the work is needed (e.g., approached by industry, results from focus groups).
2. Document industry/stakeholder need for this work and strong stakeholder/industry support and involvement.
3. Include a clear literature review of key research and show the position of the proposed work.
4. Propose a truly multidisciplinary project.
5. Propose a multi-state/multi-regional project; go beyond states directly adjacent to Iowa.
6. Address sociological elements of the work.
7. Cut across several focal areas; address two to three areas.
8. Provide a well-developed outreach, Extension, or delivery plan.
9. Document the 100% required match and ensure the match qualifies.
10. Ensure that the proposal is complete, well-organized, and submitted on time.
An additional recommendation: Be specific about their topic and the science in preparing letters of intent.
