EXPERIENCE VEISHEA, APRIL 20-21
Below is a sampling of Veishea events planned by
College of Agriculture student groups. Displays and
activities are open on Saturday, April 21. Many of the food
stands also are open Friday.
VEISHEA BREAKFASTS FOR AG FACULTY/STAFF
Veishea will hold agriculture faculty/staff breakfasts
on Monday, April 16, and Friday, April 20, from 7 to 9 a.m.
in the main floor rotunda of Curtiss Hall.
SIGMA ALPHA VEISHEA BBQ
A meal of pork and beef burgers, cheese, chips, ice
cream and orange drink are free to College of Ag students,
faculty, and staff on central campus in front of Curtiss
Hall. Students should bring their fee cards. The rain
location is Kildee Pavilion. Serving from 11 a.m. to 1
p.m.
ENTOMOLOGY: WATCH FOR 'MILLENNIUM BUGS' PARADE
FLOAT
The Entomology Graduate Student Organization and the
Entomology Club will have a float in the Veishea parade
called "The Millennium Bugs." Watch for the convertible
carrying an entomologist with a butterfly net trying to
catch partying bugs; a pickup truck advertising the Insect
Zoo; and "party bugs" (adults and children) walking nearby
carrying banners and distributing insect trading cards.
ENTOMOLOGY: COCKROACHES, BEES, MAGGOTS AND MORE
The Entomology Club will have displays and activities in
the lobby and on the fourth floor of Science II. They
include cockroach races and live insects to view and touch.
Across the street, in the greenhouse of Insectary, the club
will have displays on bees, insects in food, butterflies and
"maggot therapy."
FARM OP: LITTLE RED BARN FOOD STAND
The Farm Op Club will serve grilled turkey tenders, hot
dogs, brats, pork patties and porkloin sandwiches at the
Little Red Barn food stand. Find it on the northeast side of
Beardshear Hall.
AGRONOMY: KIDDIE TRACTOR PULL, FOOD STAND
The Agronomy Club will hold a kiddie tractor pull and
operate a food stand near Science I.
MICROBIOLOGY: BAKE SALE, T-SHIRTS, MUGS, RAFFLE
The Microbiology Graduate Student Organization will hold
a bake sale in Science I. Students also will sell T-shirts,
mugs and $1 raffle tickets for gift certificates to local
restaurants and shops. Funds raised will be used for club
activities, including bringing speakers to campus.
MICROBIOLOGY: TASTE THE POP, LEARN ABOUT
MICRO-WORLD
The Microbiology Club will be selling homemade soda pop
in a variety of flavors in Science I. The club also will
have displays on "micro-world" topics, including
environmental issues, infectious agents, food safety and
public health.
PSA: CREATE AN ANTENNA BALL AND FIND YOUR CAR
EASIER
The Public Service and Administration in Agriculture
Club will have a display and a "Make Your Own Antenna Ball"
craft table in Cy's Big Top on central campus. Visitors can
create their own little ball to stick on the car
antenna.
FORESTRY: SEEDINGS, SAWS AND SMOKEY
Forestry students will be selling potted spruce
seedlings for $1, holding chainsaw carving demonstrations
(carvings will be for sale) and displaying information on
Iowa woods, community trees and forest resources of Iowa.
And look for Smokey Bear, too. All activities are on central
campus.
BLOCK & BRIDLE: LIVE ANIMALS IN LIVESTOCK
PAVILION
The Block and Bridle Club and the Dairy Science Club
will set up displays focusing on animal agriculture in the
Farm Bureau Livestock Pavilion. The displays will include
live animals and offer activities for children.
