American Oil Chemists’ Society Honors Iowa State University Professor

May 24th, 2010

AMES, Iowa — Lawrence Johnson, Iowa State University professor of food science and human nutrition, has been presented the Alton E. Bailey Award by the United States section of the American Oil Chemists’ Society.

The award recognizes outstanding research and service in the field of lipids and associated products. It commemorates Bailey’s contributions to the field of fats and oils as a researcher, as an author of several standard books in the field and as a leader in the work of the society.

The award was presented at the society’s annual meeting last week in Phoenix. Johnson presented a lecture “The Bioeconomy — A Revolution in American Agriculture” at the award ceremony.

Johnson is internationally recognized for research and technology development of new value-added products from corn and soybeans. For more than 20 years, he has led ISU’s Center for Crops Utilization Research, which develops or improves commercial and industrial uses for corn and soybeans. He also is director of ISU’s BioCentury Research Farm, the first fully integrated biomass production farm and processing facility located west of Ames.
