January 26th, 2009

AMES, Iowa – The life of agricultural pioneer George Washington Carver will be celebrated through music on Monday, Feb. 2 on the Iowa State University campus.

OPERA Iowa will perform “A Dream Fulfilled: The Saga of George Washington Carver” at 8 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Memorial Union at Iowa State. The event is free and open to the public. A reception will follow the performance during which the cast and crew will mingle with the audience.

Carver was the first African American student and faculty member at Iowa State University in 1891 and 1894 respectively. This performance focuses on key events in the life of the great scientist, educator and humanitarian.

Composed by Iowa native Michael Patterson, an associate professor at Simpson College, “A Dream Fulfilled” was commissioned by Des Moines Metro Opera in cooperation with the Iowa State Historical Society.

The performance is funded by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Diversity Committee, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Student Council and the ISU Committee on Lectures (funded by the Government of the Student Body).
