Antonio Mallarino, Iowa State University agronomy professor, was presented the 2005 Werner L. Nelson Award Feb. 13 by the Fluid Fertilizer Foundation at the national Fluid Forum in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Mallarino is a professor and extension specialist in soil fertility. His research and extension responsibilities focus on cost-effective and environmentally sound management practices for phosphorus, potassium and animal manures.

He was presented the award for his contributions to the development of soil fertility practices and plant nutrition management. Recipients are selected based on demonstrated leadership, innovation, insight and integrity in the use of fertilizer to maximize crop yields.

Mallarino joined the agronomy faculty at Iowa State in 1993. He received his bachelor’s in agronomy and animal science from the University of Uruguay and his master’s and doctorate from Iowa State in soil fertility and crop production and physiology.
