ISU Agronomy Prof Receives Award for Nutrient Management WorkJuly 31st, 2003
AMES, Iowa - Iowa State University Agronomy Professor Antonio Mallarino has been recognized by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) as a 2003 Secretary's Honor Award recipient for his collaborative work on phosphorus environmental issues.
Mallarino contributed to the development and implementation of phosphorus indexing procedures that help maintain productivity and protect water quality by identifying corrective measures for nutrient management. He worked with 14 other scientists from universities and governmental agencies spanning 10 states who also received this award. The Secretary's Honor Awards are the most prestigious awards presented by the USDA. The awards recognize outstanding contributions to agriculture, to the consumers of agricultural products and to the ability of the USDA to serve rural America. Mallarino's research focuses on cost-effective and environmentally sound management practices for phosphorus, animal manure and potassium. He also is involved in extension programs, is advisory committee chair for the Iowa State Soil and Plant Analysis Laboratory and helps develop fertilizer and manure management guidelines. Mallarino received his bachelor's degree from the University of Uruguay, and his master's degree and doctorate from Iowa State in soil fertility and crop production.
