Keep identification of the conference or event to a minimum to have as much room as possible for names. Images that are screened behind the type make names more difficult to read. Provide name tag holders with options for wearing them, such as clips, pins or cords that fit over the head. Try modeling a couple designs to see if they are effective. And when you wear a name tag, try to put it on your right side. It tends to be more visible when shaking hands. I N F O G R A Z I N G UPDATE ON USDA RESEARCH IN HOUSE AND SENATE BILLS In their current versions, House and Senate appropriations bills for FY98 USDA research call for decreased funding of 2.7 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively. But, according to an analysis by the American Association for the Advancement of Science, most of the cuts would affect earmarked R&D facilities. As a result, funding for basic and applied research would actually increase in both bills. The chambers will resolve the differences when lawmakers return from recess next month. The AAAS Web site offers a budget breakdown at: http://www.aaas.org/spp/dspp/rd/sum805.htm#A PROTEIN/PEPTIDE WORKSHOP SET AUG. 21-22 The third annual protein workshop, "Protein/Peptide Structure, Function and Characterization," will be held Aug. 21-22 in the Molecular Biology Building. The free workshop will include presentations, posters and hands-on activities. For more information: 4-3267 or protein@iastate.edu. E X T E R N A L V O I C E S DISTANCE LEARNING SIMILAR TO MANAGED CARE? Distance education is the theme of next week's faculty-staff retreat (see item in College News). In the Aug. 10 Washington Post, Charlotte Allen writes that Educom, a university/computer-industry nonprofit group, is the flag bearer of distance learning. Allen continues: (Educom's) education-by-software agenda is a kind of Clinton health plan for academia, promising to cut costs, improve quality and broaden access to instruction. Indeed, Educom vice president Michael Roberts makes the analogy to managed care. "The doctors wouldn't do anything about controlling costs by themselves, and things finally got so bad that they took the control away from them," says Roberts. "The faculty need to face up to those aspects of learning that really require interaction with a faculty member and those that don't." As examples of those that do, he mentions introductory freshman and remedial-level courses in composition, math, science and languages.
