The 2007 World Food Prize International Symposium will be held October 17-19, 2007, at the Downtown Marriott Hotel in Des Moines. The theme of this year's symposium will be "Biofuels and Biofood: The Global Challenges of Emerging Technologies." The 2007 World Food Prize Laureate is Dr. Phillip E. Nelson of Purdue University. World Food Day - Monday, October 16, 2007
The links between climate change, hunger and poverty will be the focus of the 2007 World Food Day teleconference which airs on Tuesday, October 16, 2007 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Three international leaders will discuss the crosscutting issues of global climate change and the potentially disastrous consequences, especially for millions of poor and chronically undernourished people. Guest panelists include:

Suzanne Hunt, independent consultant working with the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Global Bioenergy Partnership,
Dr. Cynthia Rosenzweig, research scientist and leader of the Climate Impacts Group at the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies, and
Dr. Stephen H. Schneider, Stanford University professor for interdisciplinary environmental studies and editor of Climate Change, an interdisciplinary journal

In addition, there will be an uplink from the World Food Prize ceremonies.

Fall Seminar Series - Feeding the World: Are We Making Progress?
"Ghana - Enhancing Child Nutrition through Animal Resource Food Management (ENAM): An Animal Scientist's Perspective on the Role of Animal-Source Foods in Diets of Young Children in Rural Ghana" presented by Dr. Elizabeth Lonergan, Associate Professor of Animal Science at ISU, will be the focus of the second installment of the Fall 2007 Seminar Series on September 20, 12 - 1 p.m., in the Ensminger Room, 1204 Kildee Hall. The series is sponsored by the M.E. Ensminger International Chair in Animal Agriculture, Raymond and Mary Baker Chair in Global Agriculture and the Center for Sustainable Rural Livelihoods. Funding Opportunities - BARD
BARD (Binational Agricultural Research and Development Fund) is a competitive funding program for mutually beneficial, mission-oriented, strategic and applied research of agricultural problems, jointly conducted by American and Israeli scientists. Projects focus on increasing agricultural productivity, particularly in hot and dry climates, and emphasize plant and animal health, food quality and safety, and environmental issues. Researchers affiliated with public or not-for-profit, private entities are eligible to apply for funding. BARD also supports international workshops. BARD offers fellowships for graduate students, postdoctoral research and senior research scientists. Program dates for submission are as follows:

DS-2019 (Exchange Visitor Forms for Visiting Scholars) forms no longer need to be signed by the Dean of Agriculture or by Global Agriculture Programs. They may be forwarded directly to ISS from the departments.

Student Travel Consultant (STC) Program Provides Support for Students Considering Studying Abroad
Funded through the Culture Corps Grant through the International Students and Scholars Office and the Vice President for Student Affairs, STC students are returned study abroad students who work with the Agriculture Study Abroad office to promote study abroad. Speaking from first-hand experiences, STC students are able to advise other students within the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences who are interested in studying abroad. They are also able to walk other students through the process of picking a program, applying and preparing for a study abroad experience, and help design promotional materials for international programs. Market Your Study Abroad Experience: A Career Workshop
On Wednesday, September 12, the Ag Study Abroad Office will host a workshop to assist returning study abroad students in making themselves more marketable through the utilization of their international experiences. Specific objectives include helping students learn how to identify the useful skills gained from their study abroad experiences, how to showcase those skills during an interview or on a resume, and how to share international experiences with others. Guest speakers are Mike Gaul, ISU College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Career Services, and ISU students who have already utilized their study abroad experiences in their career pursuits. "There and Back" --- Reflections of ISU World Adventurers
The Agriculture Study Abroad office is hosting its 6th Photo Contest, There and Back: Reflections of ISU World Adventures to highlight the stories, memories, and experiences of Summer 2007 world travelers. Any College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) student who has studied abroad or non-CALS student who has participated in an Agriculture Study Abroad program in Summer 2007 is eligible to take part in this photo contest. Photos can be entered into 3 categories, ISU around the world, scenic view, and cultural experience. The deadline for students to submit photos is October 17 (Wednesday).
