World Food Prize
The 2003 World Food Prize International Symposium, Defeating Hunger
and Famine, will be held at the Des Moines Downtown Marriott Hotel,
October 16-17, 2003. The 2003 Laureate Ceremony honoring Catherine
Bertini, which is by special invitation, will be held at the Iowa State
Capitol Building in Des Moines at 6:30 p.m., October 16, 2003.

The second annual Norman Borlaug Lecture, Hunger-Free
World: The Final Milestone, presented by M. S. Swaminathan,
first World Food Prize Laureate, is scheduled for Tuesday, October 14,
2003, at 8:00 p.m. in the Great Hall of the Iowa State University Memorial
Union.
Prior to the Lecture, there will be a reception and student poster display
from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Oak Room of the Memorial Union
20th Annual World Food Day
The 20th Annual World Food Day satellite teleconference, "Collaboration
or Calamity: Africa in Peril," will be downlinked in Room 1155 Administrative
Services Building on the ISU campus, Thursday, October 16, from 11:00

Borlaug Summer Internship Program
The Borlaug Summer Internship Program is administered jointly by the
Plant Sciences Institute
and the College of Agriculture Global Agriculture

USDA Faculty
Exchange Program
The Colleges of Agriculture and Veterinary
Medicine are working cooperatively during the fall semester to host
4 faculty members from Serbia and Bulgaria as part of the USDA Faculty
Exchange Program managed by the Foreign Agriculture Service, International
Cooperation and Development, Food Industries Division, Professional
Development Program. This program brings qualified agricultural educators
from progressive agricultural institutions of higher learning in Eurasia
to the United States for 5 months to increase their knowledge of, and
ability to teach and perform research in agricultural science subjects
such as animal health, plant health, food quality, food inspection,
phytosanitary measures, and grades and standards. Eldon Uhlenhopp (Vet
Med), Doug Kenealy (Animal Science) and Jim Dickson (Animal Science)
are leading the program. ISU Professors serving as lead mentors for
the visiting faculty members include Mike Apley (Vet Diagnostic &
Production Animal Medicine), Don Beitz (Animal Science), Jim Dickson
(Animal Science), and Aubrey Mendonca (Food Science and Human Nutrition).
USDA Young Scientists Programs: Serbia/Montenegro
and Romania
Jon Tollefson (Entomology) is leading a 1-month USDA-funded
program for 5 young scientists from Serbia/Montenegro to visit ISU and work
with professors to learn the latest developments in science in various areas
of biotechnology including, but not limited to, plant and animal genomics, GMO’s
for food fiber, and pharmaceuticals, vaccines and diagnostics, biotechnology
policy and ethics. This experience will benefit the visiting scientists as they
apply their newly learned knowledge for their countries’ development and
in their own research programs. ISU professors serving as lead mentors for the
young scientists include Charles Brummer (Agronomy), Gregory Phillips (Vet Microbiology
and Preventive Medicine), Mark Gleason (Plant Pathology), Jean-Luc Jannick (Agronomy),
and Richard Martin (Biomedical Sciences-Vet Med).
In October, 6 visiting scholars from Romania will arrive at Iowa State University for a 4-week USDA Young Scientists Program lead by Ramesh Kanwar to learn the latest developments in soil management, water quality, manure management, veterinary policy, and swine breeding/biotechnology. ISU professors serving as lead mentors for the Romanian Young Scientists Program include David Hannapel (Horticulture), Jeff Lorimar (NSRIC), Jim Baker (ABE), Loyd Anderson (Animal Science), Jim Roth (Vet Med), and Colin Scanes (Vet Med).
Spanish Short Course
A Spanish short course sponsored by the College of Agriculture will be held
Tuesdays and Wednesdays in 307 Curtiss Hall from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. from September
16 to November 5, 2003. To register, please send a $50 check or intramural (payable

The Agriculture Study Abroad Office is hosting its third annual Photo Contest for students returning from College of Agriculture study abroad programs. Any student who participated in a College of Ag study abroad program during the 2002-03 academic year can submit up to 3 photos from their trip. The due date for photos is Tuesday, September 30. Last years winners can be viewed on the Ag Study Abroad website.
