Inaugural International Symposium - Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences and Agriculture
"Rivers of Life:  Water, People, and Global Development" is the theme of an inaugural international symposium sponsored by the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Sciences 
and Agriculture to be held April 21, 2003.  The objectives of the symposium include increasing the understanding of the role of water in human development by drawing on insights from diverse disciplinary perspectives; encouraging inter-disciplinary investigation among graduate students in their approaches to research on the role of water in development and on project/policy formulation; and engaging faculty members in in-depth discussion of issues of relevance to research.  Activities include a panel presentation, research seminar and public lecture.  Check the GAP website for information coming soon.

Spring Semester Workshop Series Explores Ag Issues inChina
Understanding China is a professional development workshop series for faculty, staff, and graduate students designed to provide a better understanding of the challenges China faces in transforming its agricultural sector and rural economy and what these changes might mean for U.S. agriculture.  Workshops will be held from 3:30-5:00 p.m. in Room 150/154 Scheman.  Upcoming sessions are:  March 13, China's Changing Farming Systems; April 23, Assessing the Sustainability of Chinese Agriculture; and April 28, Strategies for Successful Collaboration with Chinese Agricultural and Social Scientists. CIP Special Grants Progam
The CIP is issuing a Call for Proposals of up to $5,000 for internationalization/globalization grants to be spent by June 30, 2003.  The purpose of this solicitation is to fund individual efforts or groups of faculty and staff to enhance the infusion of international perspectives into the learning, discovery, or engagement activities of the university.  Funds will become available immediately upon approval of the grant.  All funds must be expended by June 30, 2003.  Proposals will be reviewed continuously until available funds have been awarded.  The first set of reviews will begin after March 21, 2003, with funding decisions by March 28.  For more information, contact Dennis Peterson, International Education Services, dennism@iastate.edu

IICA  IICA Celebrates 60 Years
On February 3, 2003, the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture Office in the U.S. celebrated the Institute's 60th anniversary.  As part of the anniversary celebration, IICA-Washington published 60 at 60, a commemorative book honoring individuals and institutions in the U.S. who have contributed to the progress of agriculture in the Americas during the last 60 years.  Individuals honored having close ties to the State of Iowa and Iowa State University include George Washington Carver, Arnel Hallauer, Henry A. Wallace, and Catherine Woteki.

Visiting Scholar Wins Prize
Dr. Vincas Buda, a visiting Fulbright Fellow from Lithuania in Tom Baker's laboratory will receive the Lithuanian Science Prize from the Lithuanian Prime Minister on March 7.  Dr. Buda was part of a three-member team of senior chemical ecology/ecology researchers who were nominated.

New Semester Offering in Ukraine, Spring 2004
The College of Agriculture has began working with Penn State University as a partner on a National Security Education Program (NSEP) sponsored program to develop the capacity of agriculture students in Ukrainian language and culture. There are three parts to the program:  A pre-trip Ukrainian history and culture course, a language course offered by PSU via the web and streaming video during summer and fall sessions 2003, and a semester abroad at Lviv State Agricultural University where students will take classes from U.S. professors.  For more information, please see www.cas.psu.edu/docs/international/NSEP/Ukraine or contact Agriculture Study Abroad, sztaylor@iastate.edu.

Internationalizing the Curriculum at ISU:  Languages, Cultures and Professions, April 4-5
The Foreign Languages Department is hosting a colloquium on Internationalizing the Curriculum at ISU for the ISU community and corporate leaders in an effort to integrate language and culture study with academic programs in areas in agriculture, engineering, and business. Students Spend Spring Break Traveling
46 students will spend Spring Break on travel courses this March through the College of Agriculture. Mark Gleason, Plant Pathology, and Don Lewis and Betsy Matos, Entomology, will lead 22 students to Costa Rica to study Integrated Tropical Crops.  Ebby Luvaga, Economics, and Eduarda Becerra, Global Agriculture Programs, will lead 24 students to Spain and France to learn about Production Agriculture in the Mediterranean Region.

Spring Break 2004 Proposal Deadline
Faculty interested in leading travel courses during Spring Break 2004 must fill out the program approval proposal by May 1, 2003.  The program approval application can be downloaded from www.iastate.edu/~study-abroad/Faculty/Faculty.  For help on the proposal or questions, please contact Shelley Taylor, sztaylor@iastate.edu

Internship Program
GAP is looking for internship sites for 3 students from Monterrey Institute of Technology & Higher Education (Mexico).  These students are participating in an experiential learning program and are majoring in Food Technology.  They will be at ISU for 2 months (June-July 2003) and will need a stipend to cover their room and board.  For more information, please contact Eduarda Becerra, 294-3972 or ebecerra@iastate.edu

Academic Internship Program Class Website
A class website (AGEDS 412)  has been developed in conjunction with an internship program being initiated by Tec de Monterrey Queretaro in Mexico and Iowa State University.  The internship program is being funded by a USDA Challenge Grant to test the concept of "Preflection" as an educational tool to enhance the concept of Reflective Learning.  ISU staff conducting the program are Lynn Jones, Ag Ed & Studies and Eduarda Becerra, Global Ag Programs.  Check out the website at www.teaching.ag.iastate.edu/ageds412/
