Global Update Goes Electronic
As part of our efforts to be more environmentally friendly and to cut costs during a tight budget period, this will be the final paper copy of Global Update.  An e-mail notification will be sent announcing the website to view the September-October issue and all subsequent issues.

I-HELP Poster Wins First Prize
During the 18th Annual Conference of the Association for International Agricultural and Extension Education (AIAEE) in Durban, South Africa, Denise Bjelland, Assistant Director of GAP, received the first-place award for a poster presentation entitled, “International Higher Education Loan Program (I-HELP):  A Partnership for International Education in Agriculture.”  I-HELP is an ISU College of Agriculture program using a loan-based financing mechanism designed to help the world’s brightest young professionals gain international experience.  The Fall, 2002 program was conducted at Iowa State University and Purdue University with 16 fellows from 10 countries.  The poster was co-presented by 2 former I-HELP fellows, Bongiwe Masuku and Thembisile Ndimande, from Mangosuthu Technikon in Durban, South Africa, our partner institution in a project led by Lita Rule.

ISU Professor Completes 3-year U.N. Assignment
Willi Meyers will complete his 3-year assignment at the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization as the Director of Agriculture and Development Analysis.  Dr. Meyers will return to the ISU Department of Economics in August.

Funding Opportunity
The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) is again sponsoring travel fellowships between member countries.  Fellowships are awarded under the “Biological Resource Management for Sustainable Agricultural Systems” program.  Details of the program are available at www.oecd.org/agr/prog/  A list of approved fellowship topics for 2003 can be viewed on the web site.  The 2003 fellowship applications must be postmarked by October 31, 2002.

Ag Study Abroad Update
There are two travel courses that will be offered this August.

Paula Teig and Chuck Steiner in Agriculture Education and Studies will take 15 students to Australia to learn about entrepreneurship in agriculture. The group will visit universities and businesses in Melbourne and Sydney.

Bill Batchelor and Stu Melvin in Agricultural & Biosystems Engineering will take 22 students to Germany for a computer applications and systems modeling course taught by Batchelor at Hohenheim University, ISU's partner in Stuttgart.
