ISU-Zhejiang University
Project
A team of ISU faculty members will travel to China in May
as part of a 3-year university partnership project funded by the U.S.
Information Agency. The project utilizes the resources of Zhejiang
University (Hangzhou, China) and Iowa State University to assist in
the development of democratic institutions and civic education
programs through strengthening of rural client-oriented research and
extension education programs. The initial ISU team will include Mike
Bell (Sociology), Denise Bjelland (IAP/Project Manager) Phil Hufferd
(Extension Field Specialist), Lynn Jones (Ag Education/Studies), and
Lulu Rodriguez (Journalism/Mass Communication).
The4-week experience will include 1-2 weeks at an extension education
training center interacting with extension agents and clients and 2-3
weeks at Zhejiang University reviewing curriculum and other training
resources to support extension education.
Global Agriculture and the American
Midwest
Approximately 300 participants from around the world
attended a conference co-sponsored by ISU and USAID in March. The
conference focused on the link between international development and
markets for the products of Midwestern agriculture. Conference
speakers included some of the leading experts in national and
international development and marketing issues, including Brian
Atwood, USAID; G. Edward Schuh, University of Minnesota; Chris
Goldthwait, USDA/FAS; Per Pinstrup-Anderson, IFPRI; Miley Gonzalez,
USDA; and Dean Kleckner, Farm Bureau. A youth panel of college
students from the U.S., Ecuador, Zambia, and Uganda was downlinked
from Scheman Center through ICN to 25 Iowa high school FFA chapters,
building on a classroom curriculum developed to specifically discuss
the issues addressed during the conference.
