April Focus on
Cuba
Two seminars in April will focus on Cuba. On April 13,
1999, Itamys Caridad Garcia Villar will speak on animal health and
production in Cuba. The seminar will take place from 12-1 p.m. in
Room 142 Curtiss Hall.
On April 20, 1999, Cornelia and Jan Flora will make a short presentation on their recent trip to Cuba (see next item) from 12-1 p.m. in Room 142 Curtiss Hall.
Jan and Cornelia Flora Visit
Cuba
Cornelia Flora, outgoing chair of the Board of Directors
of the Consortium for Sustainable Agricultural Research and
Extension, accompanied the Board to their annual meeting in Havana,
Cuba, at the end of January. This trip provided a time for the
Consortium to set direction and provided Jan and Cornelia Flora with
an opportunity to once again look at the social organization of Cuban
agriculture, building on the work they did in Cuba 20 years ago. The
Floras met with sociologists at the University of Havana who are
studying how a shift from the Soviet style of super-specialization,
high-input large enterprises toward low-input, decentralized
integrated activities is occurring in private sector farms. These
private farms are joining together into service and marketing
cooperatives (much as we have in the U.S.). Please contact Cornelia
Flora if you would like more information.

There is a wealth of information available regarding
embassies and consulates around the world at http://www.embassyworld?
Information on foreign embassies/consulates in the United States, as
well as, U.S. embassies/consulates in other countries can be found at
this web site. Most of the individual web pages for foreign embassies
have pertinent information regarding visas, general tourist
information, and contact addresses and phone numbers.
CORRECTION: An incorrect telephone number was given in regard to the AT&T International Dialing Guide in the last issue of International Update. The correct telephone number to use to request a dialing guide is 1-800-428-8468. It was also brought to our attention that there is a web site for this. Check out http://www.att.com/business traveler/otr/phone.html. Thanks to Rich Faltonson (Forestry) for forwarding this information to us.
