Globalizing College of Agriculture
Programs:
Preparing for the 21st Century
The environment for international involvement by College of
Agriculture faculty, staff, and students has changed significantly in
recent years. In response, the College of Agriculture, with input
from DEO's, Center Directors, the IAP Faculty Advisory Committee, and
Iowa businesses has drafted a strategic plan for international
programs in the College for the years 1998-2001. A draft version will
be available in January on the College of Agriculture web site for a
one-month comment period at:
http://www.ag.iastate.edu/international/programs/strategicplan.html
Faculty and staff are encouraged to review the plan and send comments
to me at dacker@iastate.edu.
Thank you.

Provost's Workshop on Russia and Ukraine
On December 10, 1997, the Provost convened a workshop on Russia and Ukraine for over 100 ISU faculty and staff, as well as representatives of government agencies, the private sector, and an official from the Embassy of Ukraine. Dr. Jischke presented a luncheon address on the development of international programs at ISU. Outcomes of the workshop included a data base on faculty involvement and institutional connections in Ukraine and Russia, inter-college networking, and increased awareness of funding opportunities. Please contact Elena Polouchkina (294-8493; elenap@iastate.edu) for a copy of "Funding Opportunities and Programs" prepared by Dr. Jerry Klonglan, Ron Prescott, and Elena Polouchkina. A report on the workshop will be prepared by Dr. Glenn Schrader in the Provost's Office. Given that 70 faculty have expressed interest in participating in a workshop focusing on China, look for a similar workshop in the spring.
Study Abroad Update
A total of $16,900 in study abroad scholarships were awarded to 108 students in the College of Agriculture. Active faculty and staff leadership of study abroad courses coupled with increased scholarship assistance is expected to produce more than a 50% increase in the number of students going abroad this year.
