International Conference to be Held in
Kiev
An international scientific conference, Globalizing
Agricultural Higher Education and Science: Meeting the Needs
of the 21st Century will be held in Kiev, Ukraine at the National
Agricultural University, September 28-30, 1998. The conference will
take place as part of NAUU's 100th anniversary celebration. The
conference will also serve as the culmination of the successful
4-year, USIA-sponsored linkage project. Administrators and faculty
from the College of Agriculture presenting invited papers and/or
receiving honorary professorships at the conference are David Topel,
David Acker, Carl Anderson, Doug Kenealy, Tom Loynachan, and Wade
Miller. President Jischke will present the keynote address and
receive an honorary doctorate. A new, full-color final report will be
distributed at the conference. For copies, please contact Sherrie

Food Security Symposium in
November
The College of Agriculture is working with the University
of Nebraska (Lincoln, Kearney, and Omaha campuses) to organize a
symposium entitled, "Alternative Perspectives on Global Food
Security" to be held in Lincoln on November 6-7. The symposium is
organized around three themes: Politics, Economics and Policy;
Physical and Economic Sustainability; and Social Issues and Rural
Communities. IAP will provide a van to transport graduate students to

Dean of Agriculture's International Research
Grant Program
The application packet for the Dean of Agriculture's
International Research Grant Program is now available. The

The deadline for proposals is October 16,
1998. In addition, our office has sent multiple copies of

Spanish Short Courses for Faculty and
Staff
The Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures, in
conjunction with the Colleges of Agriculture, Engineering, and
Veterinary Medicine, will provide short (8-week) non-credit courses
in Beginning and Intermediate Spanish this Fall and Spring semesters.
Cost to each participant is $50 plus materials. Please contact Dr.

Mexico during Winter Break - December 30, 1998 through January 9, 1999. The MidAmerican International Agricultural Consortium (MIAC) is sponsoring a 10-day trip to Mexico. This program will focus on the culture, history, agriculture and university educational systems in the highlands and tropics of Central Mexico. The application deadline is October 1, 1998. Dr. Tom Loynachan is the academic leader of this program and Dr. Ned Raun will be the trip leader. For more information, contact Tom Loynachan at 294-7636.
Future study abroad programs for 1999 will include opportunities to visit Australia, China, Costa Rica, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Holland, Honduras, Hungary, Italy, Mexico, Philippines, Slovakia, Thailand, United Kingdom, and Uzbekistan.
Study abroad scholarships available. The ISU Agricultural Foundation will be awarding scholarships to students participating in study abroad and international travel programs. Awards will be applied to spring semester tuition. The deadline for applications is November 20, 1998.
