Iowa is a Midwestern state located between the Mississippi and the Missouri rivers, west of Illinois and east of Nebraska. We are a state of culture and agriculture, blessed with fertile soil and a gently rolling terrain dotted with cities and towns of all sizes. And we are a state whose people come from many different backgrounds, folks who are proud of their traditions of fairness, opportunity, and inclusiveness. Iowa is home to three state Regent institutions of higher learning, each providing a first-rate education to students from all backgrounds and each with a history of support for diversity.
Iowa State University is a public land-grant institution serving Iowa, the nation, and the world through programs of instruction, research, and extension. The university, with an enrollment of over 27,000, is located in Ames, Iowa, a medium-sized town of 50,000. Ames has all the entertainment opportunities offered by a major university along with the parks, bike paths, and easy living offered by a smaller city. Iowa State University is proud to count George Washington Carver among its most distinguished alumni. In 1891, Carver became the first African American to enroll at Iowa State, receiving his bachelor's and master's degrees and serving on the faculty before joining the faculty of the Tuskegee Institute.
