Diversity and Multicultural Programs

GWC - Mentor Expectations

  • Introduce your summer intern to your graduate students and other technicians in early part of the program; involve the intern in groups/team discussions and activities.
  • Work with your intern(s) to develop a work schedule for the student’s project, outline research goals and methods, and establish guidelines for the student researchers to follow. The Program Coordinators will ask for a written outline of the student’s work plan (proposal) by the beginning of the fourth week of the program.
  • Help your intern prepare the final report of the project and develop the oral or poster presentation for the research symposium at the end of the session. The mentor and/or the graduate student assistants will also be responsible for “signing off” on the student’s paper for final submission to the Program Coordinator(s).
  • Attend your student’s research presentation at the research symposium at the end of the program. Participants must complete all requirements for the program, and all work must meet the mentor/graduate assistant’s expectations.
  • Acquaint your intern with the "culture" of research and discuss career opportunities in the discipline, especially teaching and academic research. One of the benefits to the student is developing a professional relationship with the faculty mentor. Frequent interaction with the student provides the mentor with knowledge about the student’s ability, work, performance, and potential for graduate school.
  • Provide half of the intern's stipend and cover research presentation costes (i.e. poster)
