Overview
The George Washington Carver (GWC) Internship Program is conducted by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and consists of programs funded through different sources and tied to several colleges at Iowa State University.
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences
The College funds a number of undergraduate and high school students who will enhance diversity at ISU. Since the program started in 1993, students have interned in every department in the College as well as in the Colleges of Human Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Engineering, Liberal Arts and Sciences and with the Agriculture Research Service of USDA and the USDA National Animal Disease Center.
High School Program
From June 22 to August 3 is the six-week high school program for 2013. High school interns receive a $1,500 stipend, half of which is covered by the mentors or mentor's departments. High School interns live and have meals at the residence hall. They are expected to attend weekly seminars, complete a research project, prepare an abstract and written report, and present their work at the Research Symposium at the end of the program. Residence advisors are available evenings and weekends for support and program coordinators are in frequent contact with each intern.
High School students eligible for the GWC summer internship must be:
- U.S. citizens or permanent residents
- 3.0 or above student at school
- Must be 16 years or older

Undergraduate Program
The 8 week summer research program for undergraduates exposes students to research by matching them with a faculty mentor in their area of interest and allows interns to become familiar with lives of graduate students in a large university and with living in Iowa. Interns participate in weekly seminars and social, cultural, and educational activities in addition to their research experience.
In 2013 the program runs from June 8 to August 3. Undergraduate students are provided with room and board on campus, round-trip airfare, and a stipend of $2,500. Mentors and/or their departments pay one half of the stipend, matched by the College. Residence assistants are available evenings and weekends for support and program coordinators are in frequent contact with each intern. Interns are to complete a research project, prepare an abstract and written report, and present their work (oral or poster) at the Research Symposium at the end of the program.
Undergraduate students eligible for the GWC summer internship must be:
- U.S. citizens or permanent residents
- 3.0 or above student at his/her university
- A rising undergraduate sophomore, junior, or senior
- Pursuing an undergraduate degree in science with interest in graduate school
