GWC Mentor Expectations
Introduce your summer intern to your graduate students and other technicians in early part of the program; involve the intern in groups/team discussions and activities.
Work with your intern(s) to develop a work schedule for the student’s project, outline research goals and methods, and establish guidelines for the student researchers to follow. The Program Coordinators will ask for a written outline of the student’s work plan (proposal) by the beginning of the fourth week of the program.
Help your intern prepare the final report of the project and develop the oral or poster presentation for the research symposium at the end of the session. The mentor and/or the graduate student assistants will also be responsible for “signing off” on the student’s paper for final submission to the Program Coordinator(s).
Attend your student’s research presentation at the research symposium at the end of the program. Participants must complete all requirements for the program, and all work must meet the mentor/graduate assistant’s expectations.
Acquaint your intern with the "culture" of research and discuss career opportunities in the discipline, especially teaching and academic research. One of the benefits to the student is developing a professional relationship with the faculty mentor. Frequent interaction with the student provides the mentor with knowledge about the student’s ability, work, performance, and potential for graduate school.
Provide half of the intern's stipend and cover research presentation costes (i.e. poster)
