Programs
IMMEDIATE GOALS
Develop effective communications and liaison with other
natural resource, conservation, environmental, scientific, and educational
organizations. These include the National Association of Professional Forestry
Schools and Colleges (NAPFSC), National Association of State Universities
and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC), American Fisheries Society, International
Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (IAFWA), The Wildlife Society,
Wildlife Management Institute, American Institute of Biological Sciences,
Conservation International, Ecological Society of America, National Fish
and Wildlife Foundation, National Wildlife Federation, Sea Grant Association,
and World Wildlife Fund. Such communications ensure that research, education,
and extension programs are responsive to national as well as state and local
needs.
Establish ongoing interaction with offices and agencies of the government
that determine research, education, and extension policies, support and/or
fund university programs, or play a regulatory role. These include the National
Science Foundation, National Academy of Sciences, Environmental Protection
Agency, Office of Management and Budget, Bureau of Land Management, Biological
Resources Division of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), National Park Service,
National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Natural Resources
Conservation Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, U.S. Forest Service,
and USDA's Cooperative State Research, Education, and Extension Service
(CSREES).
Represent members' perspective on current fisheries and wildlife issues.
Timely and effective communications are directed toward appropriate national
organizations, committees, and individuals associated with the development
of important research, education, and extension programs that pertain to
the conservation and management of fisheries and wildlife resources.
Promote fisheries and wildlife representation and perspectives on activities
such as:
- RFP panels and proposal review panels associated with the National
Research Initiative for Agriculture, Food, and the Environment.
- Biodiversity legislation.
- Development of appropriations for Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research
Units within the Biological Resources Division of USGS.
- Competitive grants programs for fisheries and wildlife within USDA
and the Biological Resources Division of USGS.
Represent its members by providing timely perspectives on fisheries and
wildlife issues via effective communications directed toward appropriate
committees and individuals associated with the Congress of the United States
on such matters as the:
- Teaming with Wildlife Funding Initiative.
- Proposal to establish a National Institute for the Environment.
- Animal rights issues.
- Funding for research, education, and extension programs.
