Entering Iowa State University in the fall of 1956 was a very exciting experience for a small town Iowa freshman. The total environment of Iowa State College certainly made me feel welcome and opened my eyes to the world of education. The faculty in all departments, especially agriculture, was friendly and very helpful. My family and I had a similar experience in 1969 when I did graduate work in animal science. As I look back students were given the opportunity to explore their areas of interest and the level of learning was outstanding. At the time we did not realize how fortunate we were to have leading scientists and professors teaching large lecture classes to incoming freshmen students. It certainly put us a notch ahead as we pursued our academic goals. Putting it a different way, "we learned from the teachers who wrote the books.”
