This module is designed to give students an understanding of the existing food systems operating in Iowa and an appreciation of the benefits of and obstacles to developing more local and sustainable food systems. Why study food systems? All students are food consumers whether or not they end up working in horticulture and agriculture. The concepts presented here are relevant to rural and urban residents and have to potential to bridge communication gaps between farm producer and urban groups.
After completion of this module, the student will be able to : 1. Describe what a food system is and provide examples of food systems. 2. Be able to describe the component stages of a food system, and 3. Be able to identify sources of information that can help find Iowa grown products
