Notes from the Field

Nebraskans Working Together to Nurture and Grow Rural Areas

by Connie Hancock, Extension Educator
University of Nebraska Extension

Nebraskans working in rural development have an opportunity each year to share ideas on how to nurture and grow rural areas. This is the goal of the Nebraska Rural Institute, a three-day event featuring educational seminars, technical expertise and networking opportunities designed to bring together individuals and organizations with an interest in rural community development. Extension faculty and educators are actively involved in planning and presenting sessions, with the University of Nebraska providing overall coordination support for the Institute.

The Institute is the primary educational event of the Partnership for Rural Nebraska. The Partnership was formed in 1995 to creatively address rural Nebraska issues through a variety of collaborative rural development strategies. The positive working relationship between the State of Nebraska, the University of Nebraska, the federal government and community-based regional groups has shown continued collaborative commitment to seek opportunities and address challenges identified by rural Nebraskans.

More than 1,200 people have participated in the Institute since 1998. The 2005 Nebraska Rural Institute will be in York, Nebraska, on September 20-22. For more information visit the conference Web site at http://cari.unl.edu/nri/.

Notes from the Field is a vehicle for sharing ideas, tools and approaches that community development practitioners can apply to their own work. If you have ideas, tips or approaches you have found useful in your own community development work, along with a URL to additional resources if appropriate, please contact Mary Emery at .
