Area, and S. Lankford, UNI Sustainable Tourism and
Environment Program (MSP01-05)
This project will look at the place-based food
tourism potential of northeast Iowa communities in
the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area
that includes 37 counties. Investigators will
explore the travel motivations of visitors and their
common interests in place-based foods in community
festivals. They also will analyze secondary data
from existing tourism resources, collect primary
data using intercept surveys at festivals where
place-based food tourism is taking place, and
interview chefs, producers and processors who
specialize in place-based foods.
