  • A study of place-based food tourism in northeast Iowa communities

    $5,360, one year, C.W. Streed and D. Short, Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area, and S. Lankford, UNI Sustainable Tourism and Environment Program (MSP01-05)

    This project will look at the place-based food tourism potential of northeast Iowa communities in the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage Area that includes 37 counties. Investigators will explore the travel motivations of visitors and their common interests in place-based foods in community festivals. They also will analyze secondary data from existing tourism resources, collect primary data using intercept surveys at festivals where place-based food tourism is taking place, and interview chefs, producers and processors who specialize in place-based foods.

  • Marshalltown Community College Sustainable and Entrepreneurial Agriculture Program

    $25,000, L. Barnes, Marshalltown Community College (MSP-2004)

    This matching grant will be used to develop coursework and other materials for a two-year Sustainable and Entrepreneurial Agriculture (SEC) degree beginning with the Fall 2004 semester. The program will train beginning farmers, sharpen skills for existing farmers, and help farmers from Iowa's immigrant communities who would like to enter agriculture. The degree will provide students with experiences in both producing and marketing agricultural products.
