Welcome to the website dedicated to Iowa's wetlands and riparian areas! The goal of this site is to serve as a clearinghouse of information about wetlands and riparian areas in Iowa. In some cases, relevant information from the region will also be highlighted.
The idea for this website came from advisory group members who helped develop the Iowa Wetlands and Riparian Areas Conservation Plan. This site is sponsored by Iowa State University's Department of Animal Ecology, with assistance from partners including the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, and the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 7.
The Iowa Wetlands and Riparian Areas Conservation Plan is summarized, and the full version of the Plan is also available, along with information about how to order hard copies of the complete or summary versions. We also provide some of the best information available directly, in the form of articles and research reports, or indirectly, as links to other publications. The calendar will be updated regularly--we invite your contributions. The best data available on the number and acreage of wetlands in the state is provided here, either directly or as links to other sites. For youth and teachers, the Children's Page should offer ideas for fun and learning. And for all, a glossary of terms will help make it all more understandable.
