Cosmic Cuisine

So you're an expert at guessing the mystery foods in the school lunch cafeteria?!?! Try your hand at putting a label on the cosmic cuisine below!
Do you know? There are several different types of space foods used on the Space Shuttle.

Rehydratable: Water is removed from these foods by freeze-drying them. They are lightweight and easy to store. Water is then replaced in the foods before they are eaten. Examples are: Beverages, cereals, scrambled eggs, shrimp cocktail, macaroni and cheese, and many other menu items.

Thermostabilized: Foods that are heat processed so they can be stored at room temperature. Examples: Fruits and tuna fish packed in cans or puddings packed in plastic cups like those you buy at the grocery store.

Intermediate Moisture: Foods preserved by taking some water out of the product while leaving enough to maintain a soft texture. They can be eaten without any preparation. Examples: Dried peaches, pears, apricots, and beef jerky.

Natural Form: These foods are ready to eat and are packaged in flexible pouches. Examples: Nuts, granola bars, cookies.

Irradiated: Products that are cooked and packaged in flexible foil pouches and sterilized by ionizing radiation so they can be kept at room temperature. Examples: Beef steak and turkey.

Fresh: These foods are neither processed nor artificially preserved. They are normally eaten fairly quickly so that they do not spoil during a space mission. Examples: Tomatoes, oranges, apples, bread.
