Long-range Personnel Planning
This spring, you are facing the difficult task of managing budget decisions in a time of uncertain resources. As I have noted in several meetings with you, I am encouraging you to be creative in working with your faculty and staff on both short-term decisions and long- range planning. As you continue to conduct your departmental planning and also provide individual annual reviews, I ask you to inform employees of the range of options available for planning their work in the next few years. For those who may be in a position to consider retirement or a partial appointment, please share with them the range of programs available:
- Option of a part-time appointment with a modified set of responsibilities
- Option of applying for the current RIO2 (retirement incentive) Program
- Option of a part-time appointment with a modified set of responsibilities and an
individualized retirement plan - Option of applying for the current Phased Retirement Program
- An individualized retirement plan
- For faculty, moving from A- to B-base appointment when job responsibilities make this a possibility (the PRS is key for this or any part-time appointment discussion)
Our goal is to be flexible in finding ways to fit faculty and staff commitments to the work of the department. Susan Carlson and Brenda Behling would be pleased to work with you or your staff members in such long-range personnel planning. I also remind you of information currently available in the Department Toolkit found on the HRS website, such as “Discussing Retirement Plans with Your Employees.”
Additionally, our new EAP provider, Employee & Family Resources (EFR), offers an employee resource titled “My Plan After 50®.” This is a free tool for ISU faculty and staff to assist with retirement planning, in addition to the guidance offered by Ann Doty in the ISU Retirement Planning Office.
Please feel free to share this with your faculty and staff.
