Youssef Asar is one of Egypt's best known artists, with works in galleries and museums around the world. In 1967 Asar immigrated to Australia, where he lived for 26 years, painting and teaching art. Asar worked at Sydney University, and in 1973 he moved to Darwin, where he established a Fine Arts College at the University of the Northern Territory. In 1994 Asar return to Egypt to observe and to create afresh. He held a successful exhibition, " Returning to the Roots," in March of 1998 in the Al Ahram Building in Cairo, Egypt. In the fall of 1998 Asar was invited to be the George Washington Carver artist-in-residence at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.
Asar has held more than 50 exhibitions in Australia, Europe, the former Soviet Union, the United States, India and Singapore. His paintings reflect his version of reality. The scenes and people that fill his canvases are unlike any you will see populating the galleries. His art evokes a universal response from deep within the soul. The freshness of the colors and variety of styles filling his works suggest he is looking at the world through uniquely invigorated eyes. The warm sunrays of his vivid imagination shine through dramatic scenes from the United States, Australia, the Netherlands and Egypt. Fundamentally and most importantly, Asar's paintings reflect passionate emotions and a universal love of nature.
