IOWA FARM AND RURAL LIFE POLL SUMMARY RELEASED

The 2012 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll, led by J. Gordon Arbuckle, sociology, summary report is now available online. The 2012 Farm Poll survey topics include farmer perspectives on increases in land values, assessments of rural quality of life and other rural issues, use of different sources of information for agricultural decision making, and preferences for delivery of information and educational programming.

The 2012 Iowa Crop Performance Tests for corn and soybeans are now available. The reports provide direct, unbiased comparisons among a large number of corn hybrids and soybean varieties, in a number of different environments.

HORT SENIOR SCORES BIG WITH SUPER BOWL INTERNSHIP

Kevin Hansen has been selected for the Toro's Super Bowl Sports Turf Training Program. Hansen, a senior in horticulture, will work alongside NFL field director Ed Mangan and the Super Bowl grounds crew on turf maintenance, logo painting, field preparation for media day, halftime preparation and clean-up at the Superdome in New Orleans for Super Bowl XLVII on Feb. 3. ISU RESEARCHERS WIN $3 MILLION GRANT TO STUDY COSTLY SWINE DISEASE

A team of researchers at Iowa State has received a $3 million grant from the USDA to study genetic resistance to the costliest disease threatening the pork industry and transfer this technology to the industry. The researchers, led by Jack Dekkers, a professor of animal science, will seek to identify genes in pigs that make them less susceptible to porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome, known as PRRS, which costs U.S. pork producers about $664 million a year.

100% COTTON, 100% EFFORT

Jonathan Wendel was a leader of an international team that has mapped the cotton genome, a watershed moment in plant genetics. An international consortium of scientists that includes Jonathan Wendel, distinguished professor and chair of the Department of Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology, has mapped the genome sequence for cotton in a paper published in the journal “Nature.” The sequencing of the genome will have sweeping ramifications for cotton growers, plant biologists and producers who grow other cash crops

DAIRYING FOUNTAIN TO FLOW FREELY ONCE AGAIN

This spring, the fountain in the Food Sciences Building courtyard will flow freely again after a 26-year respite. The fountain is part of the terra cotta mural titled, The History of Dairying, created in 1934 by sculptor Christian Petersen. A rededication of the fountain is planned during VEISHEA. Although the mural has been well maintained, the entire work of art was not complete without the fountain functioning. The renovation, completed in November, was funded by the Office of the Senior Vice President for Business and Finance and University Museums with support from Facilities Planning and Management.

CASSADY HEADS ANIMAL SCIENCE AT SOUTH DAKOTA STATE
Joe Cassady (’93 animal science) has been selected as the new Animal Science department head at South Dakota State University, pending the approval of the South Dakota Board of Regents. His appointment is effective June 22. Cassady previously served as executiv! e director of the Beef Improvement Federation. He received his Ph.D., in animal science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his master’s in animal science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

IUTZI NAMED TO ILLINOIS ETHANOL ADVISORY BOARD
Fred Iutzi (MS ‘06 sustainable agriculture) was recently appointed to the Illinois Ethanol Research Advisory Board by Illinois Governor Pat Quinn. As part of the board Iutzi, agriculture and energy program manager of the Illinois Institute for Rural Affairs at Western Illinois University, will provide oversight for the National Corn to Ethanol Research Center at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. The center was established to provide pilot-scale research infrastructure and services to industry, academia and government agencies.

BERGREN CROWNED MISS RODEO OKLAHOMA
Rachel Bergren (‘10 animal science) has been named 2013 Miss Rodeo Oklahoma. Bergren, an Iowa native, will serve as an ambassador for Oklahoma, the sport of rodeo and the agricultural industry. The coronation celebration will be January 26 in Purcell, Okla. She will compete for the title of Miss Ro! deo America 2014. Bergren was Miss Rodeo Iowa State University in 2008, Miss United Rodeo Association in 2010 and Miss Central Plains Rodeo Association in 2012.

Andrew Lauver (‘12 ag studies) has been accepted into the Frank Ross International Business Internship program with DuPont Pioneer. Lauver will be stationed in Western Canada for one year. Lauver, CALS Fall 2012 Outstanding Senior, will join Pioneer full-time upon completion of the internship.
