ALUMNI LEAD IOWA SOYBEAN ASSOCIATION
The Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) held its annual board elections at its September 6 meeting. Mark Jackson (’74 farm operation) of Rose Hill took his seat as president with Brian Kemp (’73 animal science, MS ’88 professional ag) of Sibley elected as president-elect. Wayne Fredericks (’73 animal science) of Osage was chosen as treasurer. Tom Oswald (’81 farm operation, MS ’95 professional ag), of Cleghorn, was also elected to the executive committee. Alumni serving as district directors include Kemp, District 1; Benjamin Schmidt (’95 ag systems technology) of Iowa City, District 6; Fredericks, District 2; Delbert Christensen (’72 ag business) of Audubon, District 4; Ed Ulch (’68 ag business) of Solon, District 6; Jackson,! District 9; and Oswald (at large).
HONORED WITH FARM BUREAU’S SERVICE TO AGRICULTURE AWARD
Joel DeJong (’80 ag business, MS ’88 professional ag), ISU extension field agronomist, has received the Service to Agriculture Award from Plymouth County Farm Bureau. DeJong covers nine northwest Iowa counties including Plymouth. The award goes to an individual recognized for distinguished professional service to agriculture for 30 or more years.
EVANS HONORED FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO AG COMMUNICATIONS
Jim Evans (’54 agricultural journalism) was presented the Distinguished Service Award by the American Agricultural Editors’ Association (AAEA). The retired professor of agricultural communications at the University of Illinois was recognized for his work developing the Agricultural Communications Documentation Center, a collection of information on agriculture and the profession of agricultural communications. The AAEA also named a new scholarship after Evans for his “tremendous impact on the establishment and growth of agricultural communications programs.” He is shown presenting the scholarship to the first recipient.
KRAFKA CHAIRS NATIONAL FEED REGULATORY COMMITTEE
Kristi Krafka (‘87 agricultural education and studies) will serve as the chair of the American Feed Industry Association Feed Regulatory Committee. Krafka, vice president of regulatory affairs and quality assurance for the animal nutrition and health division of Kemin in North America, will serve a two-year appointment. The comittee monitors federal and state regulatory agencies and meets with the Food and Drug Administration and Association of American Feed Control Officials to represent the interests of the feed industry.

Brent Hales (PhD ‘00 rural sociology) will become the new Associate Dean of Extension and Director of the Center for Community Vitality at the University of Minnesota on Oct. 1. He is currently with the Department of Economic and Workforce Development at the University of Southern Mississippi.
1990s
Rich (J.R.) Tait, Jr., (’99 animal science, MS ’02 animal breeding and genetics, PhD ’06) recently started a new job with USDA Agricultural Research Service as a research geneticist, post-doctoral research associate at the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Neb. Tait will be analyzing data from beef cattle populations to characterize the effects of selection for specific genetic markers on performance and meat quality traits. He previously worked as an associate scientist for the ISU Department of Animal Science at the McNay Research and Demonstration Farm.
Boulbaba Rekik (PhD ’95 animal science) is now a professor at the School of Higher Education in Agriculture, Mateur, Tunisia. Rekik recently edited a book,Milk Production, which is a collection of chapters contributed by leading international scientists from the U.S., United Kingdom, France, Italy, Iran, China, Argentina and Mexico. Rekik also contributed a chapter in the book about milk production in Tunisia.

Charles (Chuck) Warren (’52 agronomy), of Carroll, Iowa, died Aug. 26. Warren served in the U.S. Air Force ROTC, remained active in the reserves and retired as major. He sold life insurance and veterinary supplies. He started his own veterinary supply sales company in Le Sueur, Minn in 1986, which he ran until his retirement in 2012. Warren was active in the Holy Spirit Parish, St. Anthony Regional Hospital Auxiliary and other community groups including All Strings Attached orchestra.
