RIVER RECREATION BUILDS JOBS AND SALES

A new ISU statewide river-use study showed overall economic impact from river recreation included more than 6,350 jobs with $824 million in sales and $130 million of personal income. Researchers in the ISU Department of Economics and Center for Agricultural and Rural Development conducted the study with funding from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

BEEF IS BEEF: CALS STUDENTS HOLD FORUM IN SUPPORT OF LEAN FINELY TEXTURED BEEF

The ISU Block and Bridle Club and the animal science department hosted “The TRUTH: Lean Finely Textured Beef” on April 10 in the Farm Bureau Pavilion, Kildee Hall on the Iowa State University campus. The forum attracted more than 400 and speakers included Governor Terry Branstad; Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds; Congressman Steve King; Jim Dickson, animal science professor; Janet Riley, American Meat Institute; and Nancy Degner, Iowa Beef Industry Council. Brady McNeil, president of the ISU Block and Bridle Club was the host at the event.

PLANT PATHOLOGY GRADUATES CREATE RESEARCH ENDOWMENT

ISU alumni Esmail (MS ’77 plant pathology, PhD ’79) and Mary (MS ’80 plant pathology) Zirakparvar have funded a research endowment in the Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology intended “to advance the excellence of research within the department to continue its world class reputation.”

JEFF AND DEB HANSEN PLEDGE $2 MILLION TO AGRICULTURE STUDENT LEARNING CENTER

A $2 million pledge from the owners and founders of Iowa Select Farms is the key step needed for construction to proceed on a new learning center for students at Iowa State University. Jeff and Deb Hansen pledged $2 million to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences for the project. The center will be located on land south of campus and will include an indoor 125-foot-by-250-foot arena with seating for 1,000 people, a set of classrooms and a conference room. The center will be used for courses, labs, training programs, student club and judging team activities, and public events.

STATE’S STUDENTS BAND TOGETHER TO SUPPORT HIGHER ED

Students from Iowa State, the University of Iowa and the University of Northern Iowa are banding together this month to increase awareness about the value of Iowa’s public universities and encourage the legislature to support their schools. Trisha Collins, junior in animal science, was featured in the group’s launch video. The student-led initiative Universities for a Better Iowa held a kickoff event April 2 with Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad and Iowa Board of Regents president Craig Lang (’73 dairy sci). Students will travel the state throughout the month to hold events and rally support. REED SET TO RETIRE AFTER MORE THAN 40 YEARS AT NATIONAL PARK SERVICE

Patrick Reed (’71 outdoor recreation resources),
a 42-year career veteran of the National Park Service, will retire on June 30th. Reed began his career at Mt. Rushmore as a seasonal worker while still in college. After becoming a permanent employee in 1970 he was consistently promoted to positions of increasing complexity and responsibility. Mammoth Cave is his eleventh park. Reed oversaw several large projects at Mammoth Cave, including replacement of the cave lighting system, installation of the park water system and construction of the rehabilitated visitor.


MCKEAN HONORED BY NATIONAL INSTITUTE FOR ANIMAL AGRICULTURE

Iowa State University Swine Extension Veterinarian James McKean received the National Institute for Animal Agriculture President’s Award during the organization’s annual conference in March 27-28 in Denver. The President’s Award recognizes exemplary leadership and dedication to the organization’s goals and programs. McKean recently co-chaired the institute’s Global Animal Health, Food Security and Trade Council. He has served Iowa State University as swine extension veterinarian for more than three decades.

CARLSON SELECTED AS FULBRIGHT SCHOLAR

John Carlson (’74 animal science and agricultural journalism, MS ’77 animal breeding, PhD ‘80) has been selected as a Fulbright Scholar. A professor in Western Illinois University’s School of Agriculture, Carlson will spend August through December teaching at the Ryazan State Agrotechnological University in Russia.


CHLUPACH COMPLETES IDITAROD

Bob Chlupach (’71 fisheries & wildlife biology) completed 1,000 grueling miles by dogsled in the legendary Iditarod race across Alaska in March. He entered and completed his first Iditarod, longest dog sled race in the world, in 1977. He has since entered and completed 11 Iditarods over five decades. Since retiring from his career as a fishery biologist, Chlupach has worked as a carpenter and professional sports fishing guide in Alaska.


ERUSHA NAMED DIRECTOR OF U.S. GOLF ASSOCIATION GREEN SECTION

Kimberly Erusha (’82, horticulture) was named managing director of the U.S. Golf Association Green Section department. She oversees the Turf Advisory Service, Turfgrass and Environmental Research and the Education Outreach programs for golf course officials and golfers.


CURBELO NAMED STAFF MEMBER OF THE YEAR BY INTERNATIONAL STUDENT GROUP

The International Students and Scholars office at Iowa State University has selected Aurelio Curbelo (’02 ag and life sciences education, MS ’06), as Staff Member of the Year. This award is part of the International Student Council General Assembly Awards, recognizing multicultural student organizations and their outstanding members and staff at Iowa State University. Curbelo is the minority liaison officer for the multicultural programs office in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.


GAMMA SIGMA DELTA HONORS ALUMNI AT ISU

The ISU Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society of Agriculture held its initiation and awards ceremony April 12. Awards presented included one alumni initiate, Ryan Schon (’95 agronomy), and several other CALS alumni. Phil Spike (PhD ’75 animal science), animal science, received the Teaching Mission Award; Deborah Diersen-Schade (’78 animal science, MS ’81, PhD ‘84), Mead Johnson Nutrition, received the Alumni Award of Merit; and Douglas Kenealy (’69 dairy science, PhD ’74 animal science), animal science, was honored for Distinguished Achievement in Agriculture.


Class Notes

2000s
Zachary Koopman (’09 agronomy) and Micah Smidt (’10 agronomy) have recently joined the staff of the Iowa State University Research and Demonstration Farms and ISU Extension as agricultural specialists to expand the ISU Farmer Assisted Research and Management, or ISU FARM, project. Koopman has worked with custom application, crop protection and production agriculture. He will work at the Agricultural Engineering/ Agronomy Farm near Boone. Smidt has experience as a crop consultant and production agriculture and will work at the Northern Research Farm near Kanawha.

1980s
Ab Rahim Bakar (’80 ag and life sciences education) has been a professor of agriculture education at the Universiti Putra Malaysia since 2006 and serves as the dean for educational studies. Prior to his current position, he was a deputy dean for research and graduate studies. After graduating from ISU, he earned a master’s and a PhD from The Ohio State University in agricultural education.

1950s
In Memoriam:
Dale Shires (’54 ag studies) of Iowa City died on March 18. After graduating from ISU he studied at Garrett Theological Seminary, Evanston, Ill. He served as a missionary in Africa before returning to Iowa where he enjoyed a 33-year career in the ISU Extension Service, serving 23 years in Johnson County.

1930s
In Memoriam:
Casper Orlin ‘Cap’ Torkelson (‘36 animal husbandry), 100, of Huxley and formerly of Ames, died March 20. He farmed until 1960, and then worked at Hach Chemical for 17 years. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, American Iris Society and the Day Lily Society.
