AG ENTREPRENEURSHIP INITIATIVE CONNECTS BUSINESSES TO STUDENTS

The Agricultural Entrepreneurship Initiative has created a program offering businesses access to exclusive workshops, strategic leadership roundtables and interaction with CALS students. The Affiliates Program, launched in 2011, has a limited number of memberships available for companies and organizations.

MOST FARMERS PREFER TO BE CALLED FARMERS


Of the many terms used to refer to people who farm, sociology researchers wanted to know how those that farm describe themselves. According to the 2011 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll, 60 percent of the participants selected “farmer,” 18 percent chose “producer” and another 18 percent selected “farm operator.”

CELEBRATE ISU EXTENSION AND OUTREACH MARCH 25-31

Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is thanking partners and promoting its educational programs during a statewide celebration this month. ISU Extension and Outreach Week, March 25-31, includes activities both on the Iowa State campus, as well as at county offices “Last year about 1.8 million people, including almost 94,000 youth, benefited from ISU Extension and Outreach educational programs,” according to Cathann Kress, vice president for ISU Extension and Outreach.

TOUR HORTICULTURE MURAL BY STICKS

In this video Jeff Iles, professor and chair of horticulture, talks about the Sticks mural that fills the atrium of Horticulture Hall. Sarah Grant, founder of Sticks, created the artwork in September with the help of her artists and designers. The artwork illustrates the history of the department beginning in 1866.

STUDENT TEAMS WIN BIG IN TURF AND LIVESTOCK

The ISU Turf Bowl team won first place for the 12th time in 14 years at the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America 18th Annual Collegiate Turf Bowl held in Las Vegas on March 1. A video by the Golf Course Superintendents Association describes the competition and calls out Iowa State as the team to beat. The ISU Livestock Judging Team earned top Iowa honors recently as they claimed first place at the Iowa Beef Expo on March 11. The Iowa State team bested the field of 17 teams and also won the reasons division.

Major Responsibilities: Ensuring compliance with federal regulations in order to protect agricultural and natural resources from foreign plant pests; inspecting plant and plant products for export; and trapping, sampling and surveying invasive plant pests.

STUDENTS AND ALUMNI TEAM UP FOR TRAVEL TO CHINA

Seventeen students, ISU faculty and staff and farmers recently participated in 11-day program in China to gain understanding of the advantages and challenges of large and small scale farming in highly developed and lesser developed areas of China. The program receives partial funding from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The farmer participants, Tom Vincent (’83 farm operations), Jeff Taylor (’89 ag studies) and Brian Sampson, have all hosted several international groups for the college. ISU staff on the trip include Dick Schultz (’65 forestry, MS ’68 forestry, PHD ’70 forestry), Craig Chase (’80 MS economics, PHD ’94 rural sociology), Difei Shen (PHD ’06 ag and life sciences education), Jesse Randall, Denise Bjelland and Julie Blanchong.

ALLEN SERVES AS ASSOCIATE DEAN, DIRECTOR OF AU EXPERIEMENT STATION

Ron Allen (PHD ’76 biochemistry), left, has been appointed the new associate dean for research and director of the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station. Allen has taught and conducted research at Iowa State University, Michigan State University and, since 1980, the University of Arizona. Allen was previously the department head, the Roy and Phyllis Hislop Chair and professor of animal science.


ALSTON NAMED INTERIM ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR ACADEMICS AT NC A&T STATE

Antoine Alston (PhD ‘00 ag education and studies), right, has been named interim associate dean for academic studies in the School of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro. Alston serves as professor and director of the department’s agricultural education program.


SCHWAB HONORED FOR EARLY CAREER ACHIEVEMENT IN ANIMAL SCIENCE

Clint Schwab (’05 MS animal breeding and genetics, ’07 PhD), left, recently received the 2012 Outstanding Early Career Agribusiness Award from the Midwest sections of the American Society of Animal Science and American Dairy Science Association. Schwab is the CEO of the National Swine Registry, a company that provides genetic evaluations, breed promotions and educational materials to the swine industry.

2000s
Mary (Irlbeck) Ebert (’09 animal science) began work as Guthrie County Extension Program Coordinator February 20. She coordinates new programs in Guthrie County delivered by Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. She most recently worked for a swine production company.

Benjamin Price (’08 ag business) received the Silver Eagle award from Farmers National Company in 2011 for Farm Real Estate Sales. At 25, Price is the youngest employee to receive this award in the 83-year history of the company.

1990s
In Memoriam:
Eric Hoiland (MS ’96 crop production and physiology) of Rushford, died Saturday, Feb. 18. He was 43. Hoiland farmed with his brother, Phillip, and started his own turkey farming business known as Hoiland Mill Turkeys.

Pat Dillon (’97 ag studies) an Iowa farmer and lawyer, recently authored a field manual “Iowa Farmer's Guide to Legal Issues.” Dillon resides and practices near Sumner.

1980s
Steve Ropp (‘86 ag business) senior vice president and director of commercial banking at Hills Bank and Trust Company, has been named to the Hesston College Board of Overseers.

1950s
In Memoriam:
Theodore E. "Ted" Tinkham (‘52 animal science), age 81, of Cameron, Ill. died on Feb. 27. Tinkham farmed, served as town clerk for Cameron and was a board member and president of Starting Point in Monmouth.

Faculty and Staff

Allen Christian, former manager of ISU’s Swine Teaching Farm and a pork producer from Ames, was recently inducted into the National Pork Producers Council Hall of Fame.

In Memoriam:
Harry Snyder, former faculty member in food science and human nutrition at Iowa State, died Feb. 21. He was 82. He was a professor emeritus from ISU and the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville.

In Memoriam:
Dean Zimmerman (’54 animal science, ’60 PhD), emeritus professor in animal science at Iowa State, died March 8. He was 79. He served on the faculty for 34 years in the area of swine nutrition.
