According to the 2011 Iowa Farm and Rural Life Poll, 60 percent of the participants selected “farmer,” 18 percent chose “producer” and another 18 percent selected “farm operator.” More...CELEBRATE ISU EXTENSION AND OUTREACH MARCH 25-31Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is thanking partners and promoting its educational programs during a statewide celebration this month. ISU Extension and Outreach Week, March 25-31, includes activities both on the Iowa State campus, as well as at county offices “Last year about 1.8 million people, including almost 94,000 youth, benefited from ISU Extension and Outreach educational programs,” according to Cathann Kress, vice president for ISU Extension and Outreach. More...STUDENT TEAMS WIN BIG IN TURF AND LIVESTOCKThe ISU Turf Bowl team won first place for the 12th time in 14 years at the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America 18th Annual Collegiate Turf Bowl held in Las Vegas on March 1. A video by the Golf Course Superintendents Association describes the competition and calls out Iowa State as the team to beat. The ISU Livestock Judging Team earned top Iowa honors recently as they claimed first place at the Iowa Beef Expo on March 11. The Iowa State team bested the field of 17 teams and also won the reasons division. More...Alumni NewsYoung Alum of the MonthDaniel McCoy STUDENTS AND ALUMNI TEAM UP FOR TRAVEL TO CHINASeventeen students, ISU faculty and staff and farmers recently participated in 11-day program in China to gain understanding of the advantages and challenges of large and small scale farming in highly developed and lesser developed areas of China. The program receives partial funding from the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The farmer participants, Tom Vincent (’83 farm operations), Jeff Taylor (’89 ag studies) and Brian Sampson, have all hosted several international groups for the college. ISU staff on the trip include Dick Schultz (’65 forestry, MS ’68 forestry, PHD ’70 forestry), Craig Chase (’80 MS economics, PHD ’94 rural sociology), Difei Shen (PHD ’06 ag and life sciences education), Jesse Randall, Denise Bjelland and Julie Blanchong. More ALLEN SERVES AS ASSOCIATE DEAN, DIRECTOR OF AU EXPERIEMENT STATIONRon Allen (PHD ’76 biochemistry), left, has been appointed the new associate dean for research and director of the Arizona Agricultural Experiment Station. Allen has taught and conducted research at Iowa State University, Michigan State University and, since 1980, the University of Arizona. Allen was previously the department head, the Roy and Phyllis Hislop Chair and professor of animal science. ALSTON NAMED INTERIM ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR ACADEMICS AT NC A&T STATEAntoine Alston (PhD ‘00 ag education and studies), right, has been named interim associate dean for academic studies in the School of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro. Alston serves as professor and director of the department’s agricultural education program. SCHWAB HONORED FOR EARLY CAREER ACHIEVEMENT IN ANIMAL SCIENCEClint Schwab (’05 MS animal breeding and genetics, ’07 PhD), left, recently received the 2012 Outstanding Early Career Agribusiness Award from the Midwest sections of the American Society of Animal Science and American Dairy Science Association.
