BLOCK AND BRIDLE CLUB RECEIVES NATIONAL AWARDS

The Block and Bridle Club received several awards at the National Block and Bridle Convention in Tennessee, Jan. 31 to Feb. 3. The club took first place in chapter yearbook, first place in chapter activities, and second place in chapter web page. Adair Boysen, a senior in animal science, received third place in the Outstanding Junior Scholarship Award.


ISU ANIMAL AGRICULTURE RESEARCH DETAILED ONLINE

The Department of Animal Science’s 2012 Animal Industry Report is available online. The extensive report includes research results relating to beef, dairy, equine, poultry, sheep, swine and companion animal industries in the state of Iowa.

STUDY: CORN YIELDS JUMP WHEN GROWN WITH COVER CROP

Recent results from a four-year ISU study on using cover crops between rows of corn reveals that higher yields - by as much as 10 percent - are possible using the soil-saving approach to farming. The results are the best yet in the ongoing research, according to Ken Moore, left, Distinguished Professor of agronomy and primary investigator on the project. Planting ground cover between rows of corn is intended to maintain soil moisture, slow soil erosion and sequester carbon.

CALS ONLINE LEARNING ENROLLMENT HITS RECORD HIGH

The CALS online learning program had record enrollment numbers this spring, with registrations increasing by more than 24 percent totaling more than 1,100 registrations. Online classes offer an alternative for students who return home, study abroad or participate in internships. Departments with the largest enrollment included food science and human nutrition, agronomy and agricultural education and studies.

VOGEL EARNS TOP HONORS FROM AMERICAN AGRICULTURAL EDITOR’S ASSOCIATION

American Agriculturist Editor John Vogel (‘70 ag journalism and animal science), right, was recently honored by the American Agricultural Editor's Association in New Orleans with the "Writer of Merit" award. He's only the sixth person in the association's history to attain that distinction. The award requires scoring honors in 10 of 12 writing categories, such as ag issues, on-farm production articles, technical features, economics and management, human interest, editorial opinion and blogs. “It only took 40 years to achieve,” Vogel quips.

HOYT APPOINTED TO USDA ADVISORY COMMITTEE

Jayce Hoyt (’92 public service and administration in agriculture), managing partner of Go Grain LLC in Bozeman, Mont., has been selected to serve on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Grain Inspection Advisory Committee. The appointees serve three-year terms. The committee represents all facets of the grain industry that advises the USDA on the establishment of programs and services under the U.S. Grain Standards Act.


SHOVER ELECTED PRESIDENT OF IOWA STATE DAIRY ASSOCIATION

Larry Shover (’69 dairy science) of Delhi was recently elected president of the Iowa State Dairy Association. Shover and his family milk 105 registered Holsteins, farm more than 1,000 acres and operate an independent farrow-to-finish swine operation.

 He is a member of the Dairy Farmers of America Corporate Board, treasurer of the Iowa Division of the Midwest Dairy Association and is a founder and board member of the Northeast Iowa Dairy Foundation.

Three College of Agriculture and Life Sciences alumni recently joined the ISU Alumni Association Board of Directors: Duane Halverson (’67 ag business, MS ‘69), retired chief operating officer of Land O’Lakes, Inc; Alan Krysan (’87 ag business), president of the Finney Company; and Melea Reicks Licht (’00 public service and administration in agriculture, MS ’05 agricultural and life sciences education), CALS communications specialist and editor of STORIES. 2000s
Brian Ohorilko (’02 ag business) has been appointed interim director of the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. Ohorilko has been with the commission since 2004, most recently as director of gaming. He previously worked at Prairie Meadows Racetrack and Casino.

Kelli Cameron (’02 agricultural and life sciences education) is the executive director of the Blackhawk Technical College Foundation, Inc. and the Blackhawk Technical College Alumni Association in Janesville, Wis. Cameron most recently served as the executive director for Rotary Botanical Gardens in Janesville, Wis.

1960s
Charles W. Caillouet, Jr. (PhD ’64 fishery biology) has retired after more than 30 years working in Louisiana, Florida and Texas. Since his retirement in 1998, he has remained active in research and conservation related to Gulf of Mexico shrimp stock assessments and endangered Kemp's ridley sea turtle recovery.

In Memoriam:
H. Lee Schwanz 
(’47 ag journalism) died on Jan. 3 at the age of 88. Lee served in World War II, earning the Silver Star, Purple Heart and other honors. His first two jobs were as a farm reporter for the Cedar Rapids Gazette and associate editor of Country Gentleman, a national farm magazine. Later he moved to Milwaukee, Wis., to help launch Farm Profit, a magazine for Massey Harris. His company, Market Communications, developed a stable of publications including National Wildlife, Archery World, Sno-Trak, Big Farmer, Farm Futures and Buying for the Farm. He authored two agricultural books, a farm weather book and developed slide and educational shows for farmers. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, four children, five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
