Alumni & FriendsAlumni NewsPETERSON BRINGS NEW IDEAS TO UGANDA TO FIGHT MALARIAChris Peterson (MS ‘98 entomology, PhD ‘01) works with Stomp Out Malaria in Uganda to prevent the spread of malaria. Peterson joined Peace Corps Uganda after 11 years with the U.S. Forest Service, where he studied pesticide longevity. The organization he serves holds three mobile health clinics weekly, each drawing up to 120 people to receive free preventive and curative medicines. Peterson has developed a simple bed net curriculum designed for mixed ages in informal settings that he delivers verbally to participants. Over 100 villages are served by the mobile clinics. More...CALS GRADS REVITALIZE IOWA FFA CHAPTERSCassandra Brown (‘09 agricultural education) and Brooke Peppmeier (‘10 agricultural education) were recently featured in the Des Moines Register for their efforts to expand the FFA chapters at the Indianola and Southeast Warren school districts. They say membership is on the rise thanks to exploratory eighth grade agriculture offerings and broadening the scope of FFA to reach out to students from non-farm backgrounds. Brown’s Indianola chapter (shown below) has transformed from near extinction to a membership of more than 100 students in recent years. More...ALUMNI SERVE IN CATTLEMEN’S NATIONAL LEADERSHIPAt the 2013 Cattle Industry Convention in Tampa Feb. 9, Dean Black (‘84 farm operations) and Will Frazee (‘81 farm operations) were elected to leadership positions. Black was named to the 12-member Cattlemen’s Beef Board Executive Committee. CALS AWARD HONORS RETIRING CAST CEO, JOHN BONNERJohn Bonner (BS ’68 dairy science, MS ’71 animal science, PhD ’74 animal science), retiring executive vice president and chief executive officer of the Council for Agricultural Science and Technology, was presented the college’s Impact Award for Extraordinary Partnership at a reception Jan. 23 on the ISU campus.
