ISU-NCSU WELCOME MISSOURI TO MANURE MANAGEMENT CONSORTIUM
AMES -- An Iowa-North Carolina consortium aimed at conducting research on manure management and odor control has welcomed a new partner. The University of Missouri has joined Iowa State University and North Carolina State University in the consortium.
Iowa is the nation's leading hog producer, and North Carolina has emerged in second place. Missouri ranked seventh last year. The consortium was formed in February 1996.
Colin Scanes, executive associate dean of ISU's College of Agriculture, noted that the University of Missouri brings strengths in extension programs, animal nutrition and water quality programs. In addition, the two states have been cooperating on pasture and forage research in southern Iowa and northern Missouri and on farm policy research.
"The Missouri and North Carolina programs, combined with excellent work by many departments at Iowa State, are a strong foundation for this program," Scanes said.
In March 1997, Missouri will join its new partners at a meeting in North Carolina. Researchers funded by the consortium will report on the results of their first year's work, and representatives from the three universities will discuss new joint projects.
"This consortium probably will continue to grow. We're in discussions with other states," said Scanes, who directs the consortium's efforts in Iowa.
