FOUR ISU AGRICULTURE ALUMNI HONORED
AMES, Iowa - Four graduates of the Iowa State University College
of Agriculture were honored recently by the ISU College of Agriculture
Alumni Society for outstanding efforts in four categories. The
awards were presented at the society's annual gathering Sept.
21 at the Reiman Gardens on the ISU campus.
Gene Wiese of Manning received the Production Agriculture Award.
Wiese is a partner with his family in the farming and cattle breeding
firm of Wiese & Sons. He is a 1951 ISU animal science graduate,
past president of the American Hereford Association and past president
of the Iowa Cattlemen's Association. Wiese is currently a member
of the board of the National Cattlemen's Association.
Peg Armstrong-Gustafson of Waukee was the recipient of the Professional
Agri-Business Award. A native of Burr Oak, she is a 1981 animal
science graduate from ISU. Armstrong-Gustafson was Iowa's first
female FFA president in 1976-77 and served as national vice president
of the FFA the following year. She has been worldwide marketing
director-corn for Pioneer Hi-Bred International since 1993.
Lee Kline of Des Moines received the Meritorious Award in Agriculture.
A native of Conrad, he received a B.S. in agricultural journalism
from ISU in 1951. Kline began his broadcasting career by joining
the farm staff at WHO radio and television in 1954. He retired
in 1995 after 41 years at WHO. He has received two Oscars in Agriculture,
was farm broadcaster of the year in 1979 and AP agricultural reporter
of the year twice.
Neil Hamilton of West Des Moines received the Innovator in Agriculture Award. He received a B.S. in forestry and economics from ISU in 1976, and a law degree from the University of Iowa in 1979. After two years at the University of Arkansas, he joined the faculty of Drake University and founded the Agricultural Law Center, which he continues to direct. He was raised on a Century Farm near Lenox, where he now produces shorthorn cattle.
