ISU'S TOPEL NAMED FELLOW OF NATIONAL ANIMAL SCIENCE SOCIETY

AMES -- David Topel has been named a fellow of the American Society of Animal Science.

Topel, the dean of the College of Agriculture at Iowa State University, was honored at the society's annual meeting in mid-July in Indianapolis, Ind. The designation of fellow recognizes long-term distinguished service to animal science and the livestock industry.

Topel has been ISU's dean of agriculture and director of the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station since 1988. Last fall he announced plans to step down as dean. He will remain on the faculty of the university's animal science department. A search is currently underway to hire a new dean.

Before becoming dean, Topel served nine years as head of the animal science department at Auburn University. He was a faculty member in animal science at Iowa State from 1965 to 1979, where he gained recognition for his research in pork quality and for his teaching in animal growth and development.

Topel recently received the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Secretary Honor Award for contributions to agriculture.
