ISU PROFESSOR ELECTED TO SWEDISH ACADEMY OF AGRICULTURE
AMES -- An Iowa State University professor has been elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Agriculture and Forestry.
Larry Johnson, professor of food science and human nutrition and professor-in-charge of the Center for Crops Utilization Research (CCUR), was one of 10 foreign members inducted into the academy this year. He is only the fourth American to be elected. One of the other Americans is Nobel Peace Prize winner Norman Borlaug.
Johnson has worked with Swedish researchers on ways to increase the use of crops in making industrial products. Farmers, processors and consumers in Sweden are interested in developing crop-based products with environmental benefits such as biodegradable plastics, protein adhesives and vegetable-oil lubricants. CCUR conducts research on those and other crop products. The center also has hosted Swedish graduate students.
Johnson recently attended a new-member ceremony in Stockholm where he was presented with a medal. As a member of the academy, he will provide advice and counsel on agricultural research.
Founded in 1811, the academy promotes agriculture, forestry and related activities with the support of science and practical experience.
