ISU TURF STUDENTS EXCEL AT NATIONAL MEETING

AMES, Iowa -- The Iowa State University Turf Club came home a winner in more ways than one after attending the national Golf Course Superintendent's Association of America (GCSAA) meeting in Orlando Feb. 8-14.

A team of four club members took first place out of 35 teams in the annual Collegiate Turf Bowl. The Iowa State Turf Bowl Team was composed of Aaron Patton, of Bloomington, Ind.; Jason Habeck, Gilbert; Chad Wilson, Utica, Minn.; and Jeff Wendel, Clarinda. The competition consisted of a two-hour test which required team members to answer written questions, solve math problems and identify soil, seed and weed samples.

Several club members received individual honors. Jeff Wendel was given the $3,500 GCSAA Mendenhall Scholarship, presented annually to the person considered to be the top turfgrass student in the United States.

Valerie Greazel of Atalissa was one of two students nationally to receive a $2,500 scholarship in the Scott's Company Scholar's program.

Aaron Patton won a GCSAA scholarship and trip to the GCSAA meeting in Orlando and Chad Wilson won a $500 scholarship from the GCSAA. Wilson also received a $1,000 award for winning the GCSAA Turf essay contest and Patton received a $600 award for second place.
