AWARDS PRESENTED BY ISU AGRICULTURE HONOR SOCIETY
AMES, Iowa -- Awards were presented April 19 to Iowa State University College of Agriculture faculty members and others by the Iowa Chapter of the Honor Society of Agriculture, known as Gamma Sigma Delta.
Don Beitz received the Distinguished Service to Agriculture award. Beitz is a Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor in Agriculture and a professor in animal science and biochemistry. He earned bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. from Michigan State University. He joined the ISU faculty in 1967.
Three Mission Awards were presented. The Research Award went to Arnel Hallauer, a Charles F. Curtiss Distinguished Professor of Agriculture and professor in agronomy, for advances he has made in maize breeding research. Russell Mullen, professor of agronomy, received the Teaching Award in recognition of his work with ISU students. The Extension Award went to Palmer Holden, professor of animal science, for his contributions to animal agriculture in Iowa.
The Alumni Award went to Neil Knobloch, who is in his seventh year as an agriculture teacher at Mid-Prairie Schools in Wellman.
New initiates into the honor society included two faculty and two alumni. Faculty initiates were Herbert Fromm, professor of biochemistry, and Forrest Nutter, Jr., an associate professor of plant pathology. Alumni initiates were Lisa Breja of State Center, academic adviser in the agricultural education and studies department, and Jim Bradford of Guthrie Center, owner and manager of Brad Z Ranch.
The honor society also recognized two outstanding undergraduates in the College of Agriculture. Charley Thoma, an agronomy student from Independence, received the Sophomore Scholarship Award of Merit. Rachel Allbaugh, an animal science major from Waterloo, received the Senior Scholarship Award of Merit.
New chapter officers were installed. They are Ronald Dieter, economics, president; Curtis Youngs, animal science, vice-president; and Steven Jungst, forestry, secretary-treasurer.
Gamma Sigma Delta encourages excellence in the practice of agricultural pursuits and high standards of scholarship in all branches of agricultural science and education.
