ISU BIOETHICS SYMPOSIUM ON BIOTECHNOLOGY AND GLOBAL JUSTICE

AMES -- Ethical issues surrounding biotechnology and global justice will be in the spotlight at the 1999 Bioethics Symposium at Iowa State University April 17.

Organizers say the gap between the world's rich and poor nations is increasing. How will agricultural biotechnology affect this uneven development? Is it likely to lessen or exacerbate global inequality? What will happen when genetically engineered materials replace agricultural commodities produced in the developing world?

Three speakers will address these and other questions. They are Tony Smith, professor of philosophy, Iowa State University; Loren Lomasky, professor of philosophy, Bowling Green State University; and Rebecca Goldburg, director of the Environmental Defense Fund's biotechnology program.

ISU faculty, students, staff and the general public are invited. The symposium begins at 8:30 a.m. and adjourns at 4 p.m. It will be held in Room 1414 of the ISU Molecular Biology Building. A $5 registration fee covers lunch. Register by April 15 by sending a check payable to ISU to Clark Ford, 2312 Food Sciences Building, ISU, Ames, IA 50011. Or call him at 515/294-0343.
