ALLEE FARM TO HOLD DEMONSTRATION GARDEN DAY ON JULY 21

AMES -- The whole family can enjoy an evening of fun and learning at ISU's Allee Demonstration Garden Field Day on July 21 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Guests can choose from a variety of events focused on many aspects of gardening. Featured events at this year's field day include an organic vegetable garden plot, a 4-H garden and a butterfly-shaped butterfly garden.

In the organic vegetable plot, visitors can learn about heirloom vegetables, flowers and herbs; tomatoes planted in straw bales; companion planting techniques; a copper wire trial on tomatoes; and the legacy of George Washington Carver through sweet potato and peanut plantings.

The Allee mansion will also be open for tours. Visitors can see the Iowa Corn Show Trophy display that is housed in the mansion.

Events start at 5 p.m. with the opening of Allee mansion and the sale of pork burgers by the Newell Achievers 4-H Club. The demonstrations begin at 6:30 p.m. and run until 8 p.m.

The farm is located one mile south of Newell on 640th Street.
