IOWA STATE AGRONOMY FARM FIELD DAY SET FOR AUG. 24

Ames, Iowa -- A corn production field day will be held Aug. 24 at the Iowa State University Bruner Research and Demonstration Farm west of Ames.

This is the first of a series of regular field days the Iowa State Research and Demonstration Farms plans to begin hosting at its Ames locations. Several topics will be discussed including plant populations, corn response to tillage, planting date, nitrogen management, corn plant development and hybrid selection.

The Bruner farm is located 1 mile south of U.S. Highway 30 on "W" Avenue, and one-half mile east on 240th Street. The program will begin at 10 a.m. and conclude at 3 p.m. There is no pre-registration or charge to attend the field day.

Roger Elmore, extension corn specialist, and Lori Abendroth, agronomy specialist, will discuss several studies including a comparison of how different corn hybrids respond in continuous corn systems, a comparison of fixed-ear and flexible ear hybrids planted at three plant populations, and a plant-spacing study.

Lucas Borras, a postdoctoral research associate who has been studying early-season corn plant development, will present "How Corn Seeds Grow."

Dan Barker, assistant scientist in the agronomy department, has been evaluating the Illinois soil nitrogen test (ISNT) and will present ISNT results from six nitrogen application rates.

Jim Rouse, coordinator of the ISU field variety testing program, will be on hand to talk about the 2006 variety tests and lead visitors through his demonstration plots.
