BACKGROUNDER: Committee for Agricultural Development (CAD)
- CAD is a nonprofit organization that has been affiliated with Iowa State University since 1943. The CAD office is located at 4611 Mortenson Road in Ames.
- CADs mission is to produce crop seeds developed from Iowa State research; to distribute plant genetic materials and other research products to the public; and to acquire and maintain adequate land for agricultural research purposes of Iowa State.
- CAD has pledged a $1 million grant to help ISU establish the dairy facility. Over its history, CAD has provided more than $1 million in research support to ISU. CAD also provides funds for ISU scholarships in agronomy, more than $400,000 in the past 30 years. Those funds are generated from two Iowa farms given as gifts for the sole purpose of generating annual funds for scholarships.
- CAD has a board of trustees made up of 11 representatives from Iowa agricultural businesses and from Iowa State University. Dave Tierney of Ames is the 2005-06 chair of the board. The current board members are listed below.
- Prior to CADs purchase of 887 acres for the new ISU dairy facility, the association owned 3,645 acres. Nearly all the land is located in Story and Boone counties, except for 520 acres in Pottawattamie County and 200 acres in Benton County. The majority of central-Iowa acreage owned by CAD is dedicated to ISU agricultural research and production of ISU-developed seed.
- Since 1990, CAD has purchased eight parcels of land totaling 1,731 acres and sold 10 parcels totaling 326 acres. CADs land purchases are made with an eye toward long-term needs of university research and demonstration and in accordance with ISUs land management plans.
