ISU MCNAY RESEARCH FARM TO SELL FALL-CALVING HERD JULY 15

CHARITON, Iowa -- Iowa State University's McNay Research and Demonstration Farm will sell 134 fall-calving cows at an auction on July 15 in Russell.

The herd is being sold to make room for cattle arriving from the Rhodes research farm. An educational meeting will be held before the sale for producers wanting to learn more about fall calving.

"Fall-calving has certain advantages, like good weather, more efficient use of forages and increased marketing opportunities," said Dennis Maxwell, beef research supervisor at the McNay Research and Demonstration Farm. "A fall-calving program spreads out labor costs, diversifies the beef operation and provides a year-round supply to alliances and branded programs, adding significantly to profitability."

The cows are mature Angus crossbreds and most have been artificially inseminated to Simmental bulls. More information about the herd is available to producers by calling the farm at (641) 766-6465 or visiting www.iowabeefcenter.org.

The sale will take place at the Russell Sale Co. in Russell. Joe Sellers, ISU Extension specialist, will lead the fall-calving informational meeting at 5:30 p.m. and the auction will begin at 6:30 p.m. The Russell Sale Co. can be contacted at (641) 535-6065.
