AMES, Iowa -- New leaders have been named for Iowa State University's departments of agricultural and biosystems engineering and animal science. Ramesh Kanwar will begin a five-year term as chair of the Department of Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering (ABE) on Sept. 15. James Melsa, dean of the College of Engineering, and Richard Ross, dean of the College of Agriculture, made the announcement. Kanwar succeeds Stewart Melvin, who has served as chair since 1995. Kanwar is a professor in ABE, an assistant director for the Iowa Agriculture and Home Economics Experiment Station and director of the Iowa State Water Resources Research Institute (ISWRRI). He will relinquish his administrative responsibilities with the Station and ISWRRI. Kanwar has been an ISU faculty member since 1981. On Oct. 1, Susan Lamont will begin a two-year term as head of the Department of Animal Science. Two associate department heads will assist her. Lamont, a professor of animal science, has served as an assistant director for the Experiment Station and has played a leadership role in the immunobiology program on campus. Lamont will succeed Doug Kenealy, who has been acting department head since April. Kenealy will serve as teaching coordinator and associate department head. John Mabry, director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center, will be outreach/extension coordinator and associate department head. Lamont has been an ISU faculty member since 1983. |
