NORMAN BORLAUG UNABLE TO SPEAK AT RESEARCH FARM ANNIVERSARY

AMES, Iowa -- Norman Borlaug will be unable to attend the Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm's 25th anniversary June 26 because he is recuperating from pneumonia.

The Nobel laureate and Cresco native was scheduled to deliver the keynote speech at the anniversary celebration.

Instead, Fred Kirschenmann, director of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture, will present the keynote address. Kirschenmann managed a 3,500-acre certified organic farm in south central North Dakota before becoming the Leopold Center director last July. He helped found Farm Verified Organic Inc., a private certification agency, and the Northern Plains Sustainable Agriculture Society.

The Northeast Research and Demonstration Farm's 25th birthday party will begin at 10 a.m. with displays and booths of the farm's history and milestones. The keynote address is set for 11 a.m. The farm is located 1 mile south and 1.5 miles west of Nashua.

Richard Ross, dean of the Iowa State College of Agriculture and Bill Palmersheim, president of the association that owns the farm, will be part of the program. Gregory L. Geoffroy, the new president of Iowa State University, will not be able to attend the celebration.
